Matt Sughrue was a successful insurance executive and small business owner in the Washington, D.C. metro area for 25 years.  In 2008, he took a major detour in life entering graduate school at Virginia Tech University to become a clinical psychotherapist who helps individuals, couples and families solve relational problems and treat mental illness.  Matt received his Masters in Science in Human Development from Virginia Tech’s Marriage & Family Therapy Program (2012). He is an accomplished researcher and is a clinical member in the Association of Applied Sports Psychology, the American Psychological Association, and the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy. Matt’s private practice, Sughrue Psychotherapy, is located in McLean, Virginia.

Sports Performance Coach

In a unique application of his training, Matt combines his clinical experience with his passion for the game of golf.  Matt has an impressive competitive golf record. He has qualified for and competed in 19 USGA golf championships and 10 R&A Championships; all but two of these golf accomplishments (27) he attained after turning 40 years of age. He was runner-up in the 2016 USGA Senior Amateur and 2015 Senior Amateur at Royal County Down. He competed in four USGA championships in 2017 including the U.S. Senior Open at Salem Country Club and the U.S. Amateur at Riviera Country Club. At 57 and 59 years old respectively, Matt progressed to the round of 16 twice in the past 4 years at the USGA Mid-Amateur championships. In 2018, he was selected with six other seniors and 4 mid-amateurs to represent the United States at the Concession Cup competing against Great Britain and Ireland (GB&I). In the 2018, Matt was recognized as the 2nd highest ranked senior amateur in the world. He is currently ranked 7th by WAGR for senior amateur players and 995 for all amateur golfers worldwide. 

Matt sums up what he does this way;  “I help golfers and other athletes feel better and think better so they perform better and enjoy their sports more.”
