Did you know that your first email can be… short and to the point? You don’t have to write a chapter book for coaches to become interested! In fact, the more concise, the better!
Include the following items:
Personalize it with the coach’s name. You are not on a first name basis with them yet so address them as Coach _____.
A nice introduction saying something personal about the university or program. An example would be congratulating them on a solid performance in a recent tournament.
Academic information including GPA, ACT/SAT, name of your high school, and if you are taking AP or honors classes.
Golf information - you can keep this to 3-5 highlights. Focus on highlighting national tournament experiences if you have them.
Personal details that make you stand out. An example might be that you were a State Champion chess player or that you enjoy your time leading your high school’s Robotics Club.
A way to contact you in your signature. If you are younger than a recruitable age, then include your coach’s contact information.
A resume that has a table of golf scores from the past 3-4 years.
Remember that coaches are looking for you to be thoughtful and answer the question, “How does this person fit into my program?” They are busy and receive hundreds of emails every year.
Stand out by making your email meaningful and one that they will read to the very end.
